“Oh lord Anubis, I seek you this day.

Mighty god, friend of the dead,

Who guides lost souls through the Duat.

Oh lord Anubis, please open the way.

Appear, great one, I ask of you.

I’m sent to you by Nephthys, your mother

I’m journeying to Osiris, your father

I bring to you the sistrum of Ihy, personification of music and joy.

Oh lord Anubis, open the way that I might continue.

Appear, great one, I ask of you.”

I opened my eyes after finishing the prayer but nothing had changed. The sand still blew fiercely and cut at my skin. The ruins around me were just as obscured as before. I looked harder into the distance hoping to see a temple there that was not visible before but there was nothing. Or was there? I thought I had noticed a shadow move across the ground where there should be none. It was probably my mind playing tricks on me. What else could be out here besides me? I thought for a moment that maybe I had found Kherty again and I took a few steps in that direction. I called out to him but got no response. And then I saw it again. A shadow passed through the blowing sand between the ruins. It was low to the ground and moved quickly, but it was most certainly real this time. Then I saw another and another. I looked all around and counted at least 8 separate shadows moving in the distance, coming closer with each appearance. Finally, they were close enough to distinguish. I was being encircled by a pack of jackals, but they were without physical form. They looked like jackals but were made of darkness. It was a terrifying sight, creatures of shadow but with a form that took up the space a real animal would occupy. I raised my shield and drew my sword, preparing for another battle.

It was then I noticed it wasn’t a circle they had formed around me but more of a U shape. The creatures at the closed end approached me but the ones to the sides remained still. I retreated out through the opening in the U and moved as fast as I could north. The creatures gave chase and remained close behind me. Sometimes they would approach from an angle and sometimes they were directly behind. How long would they stalk me I wondered? I continued running for a bit but soon noticed that the jackals were maintaining a certain distance even when they didn’t have to. When I moved faster, so did they. When I slowed down, they slowed down as well. I was so focused on the jackals that I had not realized the storm had died down and the wind was no longer dangerous. I lowered my mask to take in a proper breath and saw through the clearing air, a structure in the distance that could only have been Anubis’ temple.

‘Had he heard me?” I thought to myself.

I quickly crossed the ground that separated myself and the structure and found that it was indeed the temple.
